I’VE ALWAYS HAD A THING FOR SHEDS.
When I was younger, the family home got a bit crowded.
I had two options.
Share a room with my brother... or move into the shed.
I chose the shed. 😂
And funny enough, that’s always stuck with me.
Years later, when I learnt how to concrete, there was just something about shed floors that I loved.
Some people look at a shed and see somewhere to store tools.
I look at a shed and think of projects, dreams, lessons, music, mates dropping around and yarns over a few beers.
A shed can end up being one of the best spaces on the whole property.
That’s probably why I’m a bit particular about shed floors.
I like them flat, smooth, easy to sweep and finished properly.
And if the job suits it, I absolutely love leaving a shed floor with that really clean, glassy finish.
Because once the walls go up and everything moves in, that slab becomes the floor you’re going to be looking at and working on for years.
So yeah... I’m probably a little more passionate about shed slabs than most people should be. 🍻

IF THE SHED ISN’T SQUARE, YOU’VE GOT A PROBLEM.
A few years into concreting, I was working with a concreter up in Darwin who showed me properly how to square up a shed and work out the diagonals. I’ve never forgotten it, and geez, over the years I’ve ended up showing plenty of other concreters the same thing.
You hear people talk about the old 3-4-5 method, and yeah, it can work on smaller areas. But when you’re setting out a decent-sized shed, being 50mm or 100mm out can throw the whole thing. Your framework is out, your walls are out, your fixings are out, and suddenly something that should’ve been straightforward becomes a bloody headache.
I remember helping a mate set up a shed slab that was roughly 150m². He’d already laid it out, but something just didn’t look right to me, so I grabbed the tape, checked the measurements and pulled the diagonals.
The shed was out by about 200mm.
And this wasn’t just a standard shed floor either — they were planning a honed finish. If we’d poured it like that and tried to add concrete later to fix the size, it probably would’ve cost another $3,000–$4,000, and the finished floor would’ve looked odd anyway.
So we pulled it apart, set it out properly and got it square before the concrete went anywhere near it.
Let’s just say I got a few extra cartons out of that one! 🍻
That’s why I’m so particular about shed slabs being square. Once the concrete goes down, “close enough” can get expensive pretty quickly.
