ALRIGHT, LET'S TALK COLOUR.
First question I get asked all the time:
Will coloured concrete fade?
If it's sitting in direct sunlight every day, then yes — over time, you can expect some fading.
If it's undercover and protected from the sun, generally not nearly as much.
Old-school concreting.
Back in the day, coloured concrete was done a bit differently. We'd pour grey concrete, throw the colour over the top and work it into the surface.
These days, the colour is generally mixed through the concrete in the truck before it even gets to site.
And when you pick the right colour, it can completely change the look of a driveway, patio or pathway and really bring the front of a house to life.
But here's the important bit.
If your coloured concrete is outside, sealing it matters.
A good sealer helps protect the surface and helps the colour hold its appearance for longer against sun, weather and everyday wear.
So yes, colour can fade.
But choosing the right colour, putting it in the right area and looking after it properly makes a bloody big difference.
PICKING THE COLOUR IS THE FUN PART... UNTIL YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT!
I once poured a coloured concrete job where the customer picked the colour themselves.
We poured it exactly as ordered.
Job came up nicely.
Then afterwards...
“Yeah... I don't really like the colour.”
Ahh, righto then! 😂
And that's the tricky thing with coloured concrete.
A colour can look great on a little sample, but once you've got 40, 50 or 60 square metres of it sitting out the front of your house, it can look very different.
That's why I always reckon you've got to look at the whole picture.
Your bricks. Your render. Your roof. Your garage door. Your landscaping.
Do you want the driveway to blend in, or do you want it to stand out?
Because once it's poured, cured and sitting there staring back at you every morning...
you'd better bloody like it!
The driveway should work with the house, not fight with it.
ENOUGH TALK, HAVE A LOOK AT OUR WORK
SO, WHAT ACTUALLY GOES INTO ONE OF OUR COLOUR DRIVEWAYS?
Consistency matters.
If we've got more than one truck coming to the job, we want the colour, concrete and slump staying as consistent as possible from load to load.
For a standard residential driveway, we're generally working with 100mm concrete and SL62 reinforcing mesh, supported properly on chairs.
Then you've got summer.
And coloured concrete can go off bloody quick when the heat gets into it.
That's where manpower matters.
You want enough experienced people on the job so you're not racing around trying to catch concrete that's already getting away from you.
Then there's the supplier.
We like using suppliers we know and trust, and with coloured concrete, I prefer having everything booked in properly rather than trying to organise it at the last minute.
The colour, the weather, the manpower, the supplier and the timing all need to work together.
Because once that truck turns up, the clock is ticking.
