Over the years, I've seen some beautifully finished driveways. I've also seen a few that make you wonder what on earth happened.
And sometimes the biggest problems aren't even with the concrete itself.
It's the preparation, the levels, the drainage or something that should've been sorted out long before the concrete truck arrived.
There's an old saying I reckon sums it up perfectly.

You can have the best concreters in Perth finishing your driveway, but if the groundwork underneath is rubbish, what have you actually achieved?
So before you start choosing colours and finishes, let me run through a few things I'd be looking at if it were my own driveway.
HERE'S WHAT I'D BE LOOKING AT BEFORE POURING YOUR DRIVEWAY.
Here's something I've learnt over the years.
The concrete is often the easy part. It's what happens before the truck arrives that deserves your attention.
I've turned up to plenty of jobs where customers have already organised the earthworks or had someone prepare the area.
And that's fine, but here's my problem.
Who's checked the levels? Where's the water going? Is the ground prepared properly? What happens when the driveway meets the garage, footpath or road?
Because once we pour that concrete, we're working with what's underneath it.
That's why I prefer taking care of the earthworks ourselves. I know what we're starting with, where the levels need to be and what we're pouring onto.
And drainage? That's a big one.
The last thing you want is a beautiful new driveway sending rainwater straight back towards your garage!
Then there's access for the concrete trucks, reinforcement, thickness, joints and all those little things that need sorting out before the pour.
None of it's particularly glamorous.
But getting those things right makes a big difference to the finished job.
ENOUGH TALK, HAVE A LOOK AT OUR WORK
SO, WHAT ACTUALLY GOES INTO ONE OF OUR DRIVEWAYS?
Well, there's a little more to it than a concrete truck turning up and five blokes pushing concrete around! 😂
One thing I've learnt over the years is that the materials you use are only as good as the people putting them together.
For most residential driveways, we're generally working with 100mm concrete, SL62 reinforcing mesh supported on chairs, expansion material where required and joints in the right places.
Nothing particularly exciting to read about, I know!
But here's where experience comes into it.
I've worked with plenty of concrete suppliers over the years, and you soon learn who delivers a consistent product, who's reliable and who you can count on when something doesn't go to plan.
Because when the concrete trucks arrive, there's no time to start sorting out problems that should've been dealt with yesterday.
We also look at what the driveway is actually going to be used for. A couple of family cars is one thing. A heavy caravan, boat or regular truck access can be another story.
Sometimes the specifications need to change, and that's something we'd rather discuss before the concrete goes down.
At the end of the day, anyone can write a list of materials on a quote. Knowing what to use, where to use it and why is what really matters.
