Whatever Happened to Picking Up the Phone? 📞
When nobody wants to answer their phone anymore, you've got to improvise! 😂
Here's something I've never quite understood.
We've all got mobile phones. We take them everywhere, even to the toilet! Yet nobody seems to want to actually TALK on them anymore.
I've always been massive on communication. My phone rings, I answer it. If I miss a call, I ring back. Pretty simple, isn't it?
Growing up, I was taught that if you say you're going to be somewhere, you turn up. And if you can't make it, you let someone know. It's called common courtesy.
Recently, I've made a few changes to my concreting business. I've removed my social media accounts, contact forms and even my email address from the website.
And there's a reason for it.
I've actually had the same person contact me through Facebook, Instagram, text message AND email. Four different ways to get hold of me, but not one phone call!
You couldn't make this stuff up. 😂
A few people have asked, "Benno, why don't you have an email address on your website?"
My response?
"Because you get to hear my sexy voice first!" 😂
All jokes aside, I'd rather have a five-minute conversation, understand your job, then get you to text through some photos and measurements. That way I can usually give you an indication of costs before organising a site visit.
Of course, sometimes I'm standing in wet concrete and can't answer the phone.
But here's my thinking. If someone rings and doesn't bother leaving a message, were they really that interested in the first place?
Or am I looking at it the wrong way?
Sometimes I wish we could go back to the 80s or 90s. Life just seemed simpler. You picked up the phone, had a yarn, made plans and got on with it.
We've never had so many ways to communicate, yet somehow we've made it more complicated than ever.
So what does everyone else reckon?
If you ring a business and nobody answers, do you leave a message or move straight on to the next one?
Tell me in the comments. I'm genuinely interested to hear what people think!
Cheers, Benno 🍻
