Exposed aggregate is a premium finish, and it needs to be treated that way.

I’m not saying this to scare anyone — just sharing what I see day to day in the industry.

 

Last year alone, I was called in to fix eight concrete jobs that had been done wrong, and three of those were exposed aggregate.

Unlike paving, exposed can’t just be lifted and replaced. Fixing problems usually means grinding, resurfacing, or complete removal, which can get costly fast.

​

That’s why this is a decision you want to lock in properly before the concrete is poured, not after.

​

We’re happy to provide a ballpark estimate upfront before arranging a site visit, so you have a rough idea of costs early on.

But to be clear — we don’t offer cheap exposed aggregate.

Pricing Guide – Exposed Aggregate Concrete

Exposed Aggregate: from $170 per m² (minimum 40m²)

​

👉 Concrete pump may be required depending on access — generally $1,000 to $1,500.

Final pricing always depends on:

​

  • access to the area (tight access may require pumping or barrowing)

  • site conditions and ground preparation

  • total size and layout of the slab

  • finish requirements and detailing

​

In addition to the concrete itself, some jobs may also require:

​

  • earthmoving and site preparation

  • drainage installation or modification

  • temporary access solutions for tight or restricted sites

​

We can quote and carry out all of the above as part of your project, so you’re not chasing multiple trades.

Every job is different, which is why we always quote properly after looking at the site and plans.

When We Pour Exposed Aggregate (Timing, Weather & the Right Crew)

We don’t rush exposed or squeeze it between other pours

Prefer Saturday pours so we get:​​

​

  • ​no juggling multiple jobs

  • proper time on site

  • reliable concrete supply

  • Cooler weather = better results (more predictable wash timing)

In summer we allow:

​

  • extra manpower

  • tighter timing control

​

​

Exposed aggregate is all about:

​

  • starting the wash at the right time

  • controlling how deep the stone is exposed

  • neat edges, corners and joins

  • consistent finish across the whole slab

  • No second chances once the wash window hits

  • We only use crews experienced in exposed finishes

No Race to the Bottom on Price (And Here’s Why)

Small details make the difference between:

  • a slab that looks unreal for years

  • and one people complain about after the first week

 

What affects quality:

​

  • concrete temperature and weather

  • wash timing

  • stone exposure depth

  • curing and sealing

  • reinforcement placement

What we do differently:

​

  • use minimum 62‑grade mesh

  • reinforce edges and corners with rebar

  • apply two coats of premium sealer

  • protect surrounding areas from overspray

  • use Prime Exposure retardant and next‑day washing for cleaner exposure

  • Same‑day sugar washes can work, but results aren’t as consistent

  • We clean up properly — no splatter, no mess, no shortcuts

Barefoot‑Friendly Exposed (Yep, It Matters)

  • Stone size selection matters

  • So does finishing technique and wash timing

  • Poor washing = sharp stones sticking up

You don’t want sharp exposed around:

​

  • pools

  • patios

  • entertaining areas

  • kids and dogs

​

We aim for:

​

  • good stone exposure

  • clean definition

  • comfortable barefoot feel

Accountability Matters (And So Does Supplier Backup)

We mainly use Holcim because they:

  • back their product

  • keep proper batch records

  • help investigate issues if something goes wrong

​

If there’s a problem:

​

  • we deal with the plant

  • we work out the fix

  • we don’t just walk away

​

Because at the end of the day, it’s our name on your concrete.

Matching Existing Exposed Aggregate

Best chance of a close match:

  • deal directly with the concrete plant

  • select the exact mix

  • customer organise payment upfront

Even then:

​

  • colour and stone can still vary between batches

  • matching is never guaranteed
